    Maryland’s list of Summer Olympics medalists goes back to the first modern games

    More than two dozen athletes with Maryland ties are set to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Some of them are already among the at least 30 Maryland medalists from the Summer Games, a list that goes back to the first modern Olympics in 1896. If counting by medal winners, swimming is Maryland’s best sport, which was the case even before Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky , while basketball also makes a strong showing. The list below includes athletes who were either born in Maryland or lived in the state for an extended period.     Kevin Durant, basketball (2021, 2016, 2012)

    Raised in Suitland in Prince George’s County, NBA basketball player Kevin Durant is to compete in his fourth Olympics in Paris. He has won three gold medals with Team USA.

    Katie Ledecky, swimming (2021, 2016, 2012)

    From Bethesda, Katie Ledecky has won seven gold medals and three silver. One of swimming’s elites, she looks to add to her count in Paris, which is her fourth Olympics. Ledecky was 15 when she won her first gold, in the 800m freestyle, in London in 2012.

    Kyle Snyder, wrestling (2021, 2016)

    Competing in Paris this year, wrestler Kyle Snyder, a Woodbine native, has two medals in the 97kg weight class for freestyle wrestling, a gold in in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and a silver in Tokyo in 2021.

    Chase Kalisz, swimming (2021, 2016)

    Born in Bel Air, Fallston High graduate Chase Kalisz won gold in the 400-meter individual medley in Tokyo in 2021 and silver in the 400 IM in Rio in 2016.

    Katie Zaferes, triathlon (2021)

    Triathlete Katie Zaferes is from Hampstead and went to North Carroll High School. In the Tokyo games she won a silver medal in the mixed team relay and a bronze medal in the traditional Olympic distance triathlon.

    Aaron Russell, volleyball (2016)

    Ellicott City native Aaron Russell helped the United States men’s volleyball team win a bronze medal at the Rio Olympics and is competing in Paris in 2024.

    Helen Maroulis, wrestling (2021,2016)

    Helen Maroulis is a freestyle wrestler born in Rockville. She won gold in Rio 2016 and Bronze in Tokyo in 2021. She is competing in Paris.

    Michael Phelps, swimming (2016, 2012, 2008, 2004)

    Rodgers Forge native Michael Phelps, who trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 medals, 23 gold, three silver and two bronze.

    Angel McCoughtry, basketball (2016, 2012)

    WNBA player Angel McCoughtry was born in Baltimore and was a standout at St. Frances Academy. She won gold with Team USA in 2016 and 2012.

    Carmelo Anthony, basketball (2016, 2012, 2008, 2004)

    Towson Catholic High standout and NBA star Carmelo Anthony won three gold medals and one bronze with the U.S. men’s basketball team.

    Georgia Gould, cycling (2012)

    Cyclist Georgia Gould was born in Baltimore and attended Roland Park Country School. She won a bronze in the cross country mountain bike event in London in 2012.

    Wyatt Allen, rowing (2008, 2004)

    Born in Baltimore, rower Wyatt Allen won gold in 2004 in Athens and bronze in 2008 in Beijing.

    Bernard Williams, sprinting (2004, 2000)

    From Baltimore and a graduate of Carver Vocational-Technical High School, track and field sprinter Bernard Williams won gold in the 400-meter relay in Sydney in 2000 and silver in the 200-meter dash in Athens in 2004.

    Courtney Kupets, gymnastics (2004)

    From Gaithersburg, gymnast Courtney Kupets won silver in the team competition and bronze on uneven bars in 2004.

    Joe Jacobi, whitewater (2004, 1992)

    Born in Bethesda, canoeist Joe Jacobi trained in the waters of the Potomac River. He competed in two Olympics and won gold in men’s doubles canoe slalom in Barcelona in 1992.

    Dominique Dawes, gymnastics (2000, 1996, 1992)

    A three-time Olympian from Silver Spring, gymnast Dominique Dawes won a gold medal in the team all-around in Atlanta in 1996. She won a bronze the same year in the floor exercise and picked up bronzes in the team all-around in Sydney in 2000 and in Barcelona in 1992.

    Tommy Hannan, swimming (2000)

    Born in Baltimore and a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School, swimmer Tommy Hannan won gold as a swimmer in the preliminaries of the Sydney 2000 400 medley relay, which was won by teammates swimming in the finals.

    Bradley Schumacher, swimming (1996)

    Born in Bowie, swimmer Bradley Schumacher won two gold medals in the freestyle relays in Atlanta in 1996. He returned to the Olympics in 2000 to compete in water polo.

    Beth Botsford, swimming (1996)

    Garrison Forest graduate Beth Botsford won two gold medals as a 15-year-old at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Botsford grew up in Timonium and trained at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. She won gold in the 100-meter backstroke and the individual medley relay.

    Anita Nall, swimming (1992)

    From Towson, Anita Nall was a swimmer at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club and attended Towson Catholic High School. A breaststroke specialist, at 16 years old she won a medal of each color in Barcelona in 1992, gold in the 400 medley relay, silver in the 100-meter breaststroke and bronze in 200-meter breaststroke.

    Pam Shriver, tennis (1988)

    Born in Baltimore and a graduate of McDonogh in Owings Mills, Pam Shriver won gold in tennis doubles with partner Zina Garrison in Seoul in 1988.

    Betsy Beard, rowing (1984)

    Born in Baltimore, rower Betsy Beard was a was member of the American eight team that won gold in Los Angeles in 1984.

    Scott Steele, windsurfing (1984)

    A graduate of Severn School and St. Mary’s College, Scott Steele won a windsurfing silver medal in Los Angeles in 1984.

    Theresa Andrews, swimming (1984)

    Raised in Annapolis, Theresa Andrews was the first Olympic star to come from the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. In Los Angeles in 1984 she won golds in the 100-meter backstroke and 400 medley relay.

    Sugar Ray Leonard, boxing (1976)

    Sugar Ray Leonard grew up in Prince George’s County’s Palmer Park. In an upset over Cuban boxer Andres Aldama he won gold as a light welterweight in Montreal in 1976.

    Tom McMillen, basketball (1972)

    An All-American forward on the University of Maryland men’s basketball team, Tom McMillen played on the 1972 U.S. Olympic team that refused to accept its silver medals following its controversial loss to the U.S.S.R. in the gold medal game in Munich.

    Jamie McEwan, whitewater (1972)

    Slalom canoeist James McEwan was born in Olney and learned kayaking at Valley Mill Camp. He won a bronze medal in Munich in 1972.

    Debbie Meyer, swimming (1968)

    From Annapolis, Debbie Meyer won three gold medals at age 16 in Mexico City in 1968. She won in the 200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle and 800-meter freestyle.

    Consetta Caruccio-Lenz, gymnastics (1948, 1936)

    Competing before women gymnasts were awarded individual medals in the Olympics, which began in 1952, Cambridge native Consetta Caruccio-Lenz was on the 1936 and 1948 U.S. women’s gymnastics teams, winning a bronze medal with the team in 1948.

    Robert Garrett, track and field (1900, 1896)

    Robert Garrett was from a banking and railroad family in Baltimore County. At the first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896, he won two gold medals, in men’s discus throw and men’s shot put; and two silver medals, in men’s long jump and men’s high jump. In Paris in 1900 he won two bronze medals, in shot put and standing triple jump.
