Former NFL Star Wants To See More From 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk

It’s another day without any clear conclusion to the Brandon Aiyuk off-season trade storyline. However, with Aiyuk back at San Francisco 49ers practice, it appears that the worst of the drama is over for now.

Either way, the wide receiver is set to play in 2024. As such, one analyst has returned to the topic of football with the receiver instead of money or an exit.

During an episode of FS1’s “Speak,” former NFL wide receiver and current analyst James Jones refused to elevate Aiyuk to CeeDee Lamb’s level.

“I don’t think he’s in CeeDee Lamb’s ballpark because we haven’t seen it yet,” Jones said.

He went on to claim that when Lamb steps out onto the field, he gets on the entire defense’s radar. When Aiyuk steps out onto the field, defensive attention turns to other parts of the offense.

According to ESPN’s depth chart , Aiyuk is the team’s second receiver behind Deebo Samuel. However, with Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle—the league’s only 1000-yard tight end last season—on the field, Aiyuk can get lost quickly.

Still, despite competing with Samuel and Kittle for targets and attention, Aiyuk earned nearly 1400 yards in 2023. His totals have continued to grow every season, offering hope for the future.

Whether it is the 49ers or another team like the rumored Washington Commanders, Aiyuk has a strong case to be worth the extra money.

Brandon Aiyuk’s future remains murky but bright

Of course, as a comparison to Lamb, Aiyuk still has a way to go. Lamb was one of the best receivers in the NFL last season, sitting in a race with Tyreek Hill. Aiyuk isn’t at a level like Lamb and he isn’t at a level like Hill yet. However, he does have a shot to get there at some point.

That said, sitting as the second wide receiver on a team opens up extra opportunities for Aiyuk. While Lamb has to deal with the best corners and double teams in the NFL, Aiyuk is able to face second-string cornerbacks.

At this point, it is unclear for sure if he would dominate at the same level, worse, or better as a top receiver. Currently, Brandon Aiyuk is one of the best No. 2 wide receivers in the NFL.
