A small tornado touched down in Oswego County and damaged trees during storms on July 24, according to the National Weather Service. The tornado struck near the town of Orwell, causing a short path of broken tree limbs near a tributary of Pennock Brook. The estimated peak winds for the twister was 85 mph, placing it on the upper limit of the Enhanced Fujita Scale rating of 0; it traveled 0.2 miles and had a maximum width of 75 yards.

The same day, a tornado was recorded in Fulton County, near Broadalbin. The EF-0 tornado reached an estimated peak wind of 80 mph and traveled just 0.17 miles.

The twister touched down in the backyard of a local barbershop, then traveled across state Route 29 and felled tree limbs in the front yard of a home. It lasted approximately one minute, reaching a maximum width of 30 yards.

There have now been 22 tornadoes in New York this month, shattering the previous record of 13 set in 1992. It also brings New York to a total of 24 tornadoes for the year, moving it into second place for any year since 1950. The record of 25 was set in 1992.

Has this been a bad year for tornadoes?

Overall, the United States is well ahead of its historical average yet well behind 2011, which was an incredibly active year for tornadoes. Through July 25 in 2011, there were 1,983 tornadoes; the average is 1,006 from 2010 to 2023.

So far this year there have been 1,486 twisters nationwide, eclipsing the annual average since 2010 of 1,355 for the full year.
