Ozaukee County's new district attorney, Benjamin Lindsay, was sworn into office Friday morning.

The previous day, Gov. Tony Evers announced his appointment of Lindsay, former Ozaukee County assistant district attorney, to the role, filling a vacancy left after Adam Gerol, the former district attorney, was appointed to the Ozaukee County Circuit Court – Branch 1, according to a July 25 release from the Governor's office.

Lindsay, a Republican, will serve for the remainder of Gerol's unexpired term, which ends January 2025, though he will likely serve after. According to the District Attorney's office, he is also the only person who has submitted to run for the seat in the November election.

“I know, from my many years working alongside Ben Lindsay, that he will be an outstanding district attorney who will zealously defend the safety and security of our community," Gerol said in the release.

Lindsay served as an assistant district attorney in Ozaukee County since June 2018, prosecuting a wide variety of criminal offenses, including homicide, sexual assault, domestic violence, drug trafficking, and impaired and reckless driving cases, according to the release.

He also serves as the juvenile justice prosecutor in the county. Before that, he was an assistant district attorney in the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for six years, where he prosecuted general felonies and became a supervising attorney overseeing a team of five prosecutors.

“Benjamin Lindsay is an experienced prosecutor who is committed to a career of public service,” Evers said in the release. “He will serve the people of Ozaukee County well as district attorney.”

Lindsay resides in Cedarburg with his family and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin Law School. Prior to his legal career, he worked in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel from 2006 to 2008.

“I am excited and honored to serve as Ozaukee County District Attorney and will work hard to ensure the safety of our community,” Lindsay said in the release. “The governor’s appointment will help ensure continuity of leadership in the office during this transition period. Thank you to Governor Evers for this opportunity to continue to serve the people of Ozaukee County.”
