Vice presidential candidate JD Vance joined Megyn Kelly on Friday and addressed backlash to resurfaced comments in which Vance railed against “childless cat ladies” and questioned Democrats who do not have children.

On SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show , Kelly placed clips from Vance’s 2021 comments as well as pushback in the media . During an event while he running for senator, Vance said he was taking aim at the “childless left.”

“It’s one thing to recognize there are people who don’t want to have children through no faults or choice of their own, but it’s something else to build a political movement, invest it theoretically in the future of this country when not a single one of them has any physical commitment to the future of this country,” Vance said.

He would later appear on Fox News with Tucker Carlson and rage against “childless cat ladies” on the left.

Some of the backlash to Vance’s comments include the fact that he named multiple “childless” Democrats, including Kamala Harris , Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , and Pete Buttigieg . One of the problems with Vance’s talk that critics quickly pointed out is that Harris is a stepmother and Buttigieg would only weeks later adopt a child with his partner.

“I know the media wants to attack me and wants me to back down on this, Megyn, but the simple point I made is that having children, becoming a father, becoming a mother, I really do think it changes your perspective in a pretty profound way,” Vance told Kelly. “This is something of course we’ve recognized for hundreds of years in this country and in human civilization.”

Kelly noted declining birth rates is an issue that has been raised on both sides of the political aisle.

Vance denounced the modern Democratic Party as “anti-kid” and insisted he was not trying to be critical of people who don’t have children.

“It’s not a criticism of people who don’t have children. I explicitly said in my remarks, despite the fact that the media has lied about this, that this is not about criticizing people who for various reasons didn’t have kids, this is about criticizing the Democratic Party for becoming anti-family and anti-child,” he said.

Vance raised alarm about the country’s ability to “replace itself.”

“If your society is not having enough children to replace itself, that is a profoundly dangerous and destabilizing thing,” the Republican said. “You look across history, that’s a real problem.”
