The brand new Joker: Folie à Deux trailer unleashes Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn , and in an interview with Empire Magazine , the Academy Award winner gave them a taste of what to expect from her portrayal of the iconic role in Todd Phillips' follow-up to his billion-dollar Joker .
Joker: Folie à Deux 's casting director said Lady Gaga will blow your mind in the new film , and from what Lady Gaga herself tells Empire, it feels like we're in for some surprises.
"People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That's me as that performer, but that is not what this movie is," Gaga tells Empire. "I'm playing a character. So I worked a lot on the way that I sang to come from Lee, and to not come from me as a performer."
An exclusive new image dropped of Gaga in action in a red circus-style jacket, adorned in her signature make-up. She looks lost in her portrayal, fully in character as the iconic Harley Quinn, a role played by many, including, most recently, Margot Robbie.
Todd Phillips says "music is an essential element" in Joker : Folie à Deux , and Gaga spoke about what is was like joining that world.
"How do you take music and have it just be an extension of the dialogue, as opposed to breaking into song for no conceivable reason?" Gaga tells Empire. "It was unlike anything I've ever done before."
Lady Gaga even got into the technicality of it all, saying, "When I breathe to sing on stage, I have this very controlled way to make sure that I'm on pitch and it's sustained at the right rhythm and amount of time, but Lee would never know how to do any of that."
Joker: Folie à Deux will have its world premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival before it hits theaters worldwide in October. With a festival debut matching Joker 's, it is expected to be in the running come awards season.
Joker scored eleven Oscar nominations at the 2020 Academy Awards, winning two: Joaquin Phoenix in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role category and a Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score) award for Hildur Guðnadóttir.
