When a puppy finds their voice, it's always a sweet moment, especially when it comes with a long, dramatic whimper and multiple attempts to bellow out their sounds. Norman the Basset Hound found his voice early on and thankfully, his "pawrents" captured it all on camera.

In a fun throwback video shared to TikTok by ( @norman_bunz_the_basset ), Norman Bunz the Basset Hound is just a baby learning to bay for the first time. Watch his epic "awoo" below!

"The smolest of howls," the caption says. The brief 8-second clip shows Norman as a puppy. The small hound gives his first howl everything he has with his chin up and tail wagging. He's pretty proud of himself and for good reason. The sound is simply beautiful, and among Norman's many followers, it's a great first attempt at baying the way adult Basset Hounds do. With a little practice, he'll be a howling champ!

"That first Baying is so everything. Sing it Baby," one person wrote. "10's ALL across the board," another said. "Sing the song of your people," another added.

Now that Norman has grown, his "awoos have gotten more powerful, as seen in may of his other videos . He's gotten plenty of practice perfecting the tone and projection, but it's still great to be reminded where it all began—with the tiniest of adorable howls.

When Do Basset Hounds Learn to Howl?

Like Norman, some puppies howl, or bay, for a number of reasons. The American Kennel Club notes that howling happens at different ages , depending on the breed. Older dogs that descended from ancient breeds (like Siberian Huskies, Chow Chows, and Basenjis) are more vocal than young pups while scientists discovered it's the opposite when it comes to barking. Generally, it can happen anywhere from 1-4 months.

Not all dogs take to howling, but for those who do, it becomes a trademark of their personalities and something that can be both entertaining and endearing to watch their inner dog come out in full force.

The baying sound is more likely in breeds like hound breed such as Bassets, Beagles, and Black and Tan Coonhounds, and they may howl for a few reasons such as wanting attention, to communicate with people or other dogs, to express emotions, to let others know they're there, to convey pain or discomfort, or because they've been triggered by a noise (like a siren or another dog's howl).

Whatever age Norman began to howl, it's only gotten cuter (and louder) with age!
