If you only saw how badly my closet was "organized," you'd likely weep. It's... pretty tragic. I've tried my best to keep things in order, but organization has never been my strong suit, and sooner or later, it all falls out of whack again. So lately, I've started doing what a lot of other clutterbugs do: I'm turning to the TikTok organization girlies for help.

Luckily, I may have found the solution to my closet conundrum, thanks to home organization guru Jill Koch. Jill has a plethora of tips and trips for organizing and maximizing closet space, and they're so foolproof that even a scatterbrain like me can implement them!

Jill, aka @jillcomesclean , doesn't throw out a million hard-to-follow tips, nor does she advocate for buying overpriced, single-purpose novelty organization gadgets. All of her closet organization tricks are very easy to implement, and the items she does recommend buying are affordable and can be used for holding various clothes, accessories, etc. (all of which are listed on her Amazon storefront ).

    No More Organizational "Hang-Ups"

It occurred to me watching this that I've never given a ton of thought to what I'm using to hang my clothes on in the closet. I normally just pick up a standard pack of closet hangers, throw my stuff on them, and never give them a second thought - that is, until I start to get frustrated by how much space they're taking up.

For Jill, diversification is key for space-saving and organization. For example, half of those normal-sized hangers could be swapped for baby clothes hangers, which Jill says are ideal for holding "smaller" items like pants, tank tops, and bathing suits. Because they're small, they take up way less space in your closet while serving essentially the same purpose. She also recommends using S-hooks, which are even less intrusive than baby hangers, for stuff like jeans, bags, belts, and anything that can be hung on a singular loop. Man... this is making me realize just how much of my own closet space could be freed up if I ditched half of my hangers for these alternatives. What a wake-up call!

Making Efficient Use of Limited Space

Making efficient use of your closet space is always crucial when it comes to organization. As I myself can attest, even a walk-in closet can get pretty jumbled and cluttered if you're not using your limited real estate wisely. While Jill's tips here aren't universal (some of them depend a lot on your closet's size and specific features), they're worth trying out if they work in your space.

For example, if you've got an undershelf area with sufficient ground clearance, you can turn that into an area to store smaller or lighter items by installing pull-out clothes hanger rods on the underside. This is where she stores her baby-hanger items. Wall hooks are also ideal for hanging light items like bags, belts, and hats (this is the one suggestion on her list that I already have implemented in my own closet).

Unfortunately, Jill's closet has a lot of nice built-in shelving, while mine currently does not. If you do have a little alcove or a dresser in your closet, though, use that extra surface area for storing jewelry, sunglasses, and other accessories. Jill has these items stowed on special accessory holders for extra organization and efficiency.

    Simple Changes for Success

While I admire a lot of cool organization ideas I see online, some of them involve precise organization systems that can get a little overwhelming. But the suggestions Jill makes here are simple, cheap to implement, and don't require you to memorize complex, granular organization protocols. These are the kinds of organization tips that suit my always-busy, sometimes-absent-minded self, and you can bet I'll be implementing some of these in my own closet soon!
