The National Weather Service (NWS) in Aberdeen, South Dakota, has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook and a Heat Advisory for central and northeast South Dakota, as well as west central Minnesota. The advisory warns of dangerously high temperatures and potential severe weather.

    Key Highlights:

    1. Heat Advisory:

    • Duration: In effect until 8 PM CDT (7 PM MDT) this evening.
    • Areas Affected: Portions of west central Minnesota and central, north central, and northeast South Dakota, including cities such as Fort Pierre, Watertown, Milbank, Fort Thompson, and Pierre.
    • Expected Conditions: Heat index values ranging from 97 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. The combination of high temperatures and humidity increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

    • Stay in air-conditioned environments.
    • Avoid prolonged sun exposure.
    • Check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.
    • Limit strenuous activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
    • Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.

    2. Hazardous Weather Outlook:

    • Today and Tonight: Heat indices will rise well into the 90s across the region, with temperatures and heat indices potentially reaching around 100 degrees along and south of Highway 14. There is a marginal risk (1 out of 5) for severe storms in central South Dakota tonight, primarily threatening strong winds.
    • Saturday through Thursday: Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist into Saturday, with another marginal risk for severe storms late Saturday. The main concerns will be large hail and strong winds.

Spotter Information: Spotter activation is not expected at this time, but residents should remain alert for any updates from local authorities.
