Aaron Stanford has detailed how he came to reprise his role as Pyro from the X-Men movies after almost 20 years.

The actor, who plays the fire-manipulating mutant in Deadpool and Wolverine , tells Men’s Journal the offer came out of the blue.

“They called me up. The first round was phone calls to my agent from the MCU asking about availability and what I was up to, and we weren’t sure what was happening. But then I got on the phone with the director Shawn [Levy] and he let me know, we’re doing Deadpool and Wolverine and we would love to bring Pyro back.”

So did anything change in Stanford’s portrayal? After all, the last time we last saw him was in 2006, when he lost a fight against Ice Man during the final battle of X-Men: The Last Stand .

“I went back to the old movies and to the established character, but Deadpool is a different type of film tonally to the old X-Men movies,” says Stanford. “So an adjustment had to be made. I brought the old character but I shifted gears to fit in this very different universe that’s very satirical and very self-aware and over-the-top.”

With news Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is basing the next next phase of the MCU around introducing mutants from the X-Men universe, Stanford might have more Pyro appearances in him. However, he says he’s been out of the loop.

“I hadn’t heard that. That’s interesting. You know I don’t bother to speculate about that stuff. It’s beyond my control. It’s not up to me. If they feel like Pyro has a place in the next wave of X-Men movies I would be very open to discussing that.”

Beyond Pyro, Stanford is currently appearing in Paramount+ movie Finestkind with Tommy Lee Jones, Ben Foster, and Jenna Ortega, which follows a group of fisherman who get caught up in the heroin trade.
