A Maryland woman and bingo lover thought she won $500 on a bingo-themed scratch-off. She’d actually won much more.
The Prince George’s County woman asked her son to pick up some scratch-off tickets on his way home, one of which contained Gold Bar Bingo’s top prize of $50,000 , according to a July 26 news release from the Maryland Lottery.
She took her time playing the $3 and $5 tickets, lottery officials said.
When she revealed four corners — one of the three ways to win on Gold Bar Bingo — she thought she’d won $500, lottery officials said.
“I didn’t really see it right away,” the retired housekeeper told lottery officials, referencing the “X” shape her revealed numbers formed.
She asked her son to look over her ticket, but he wasn’t sure of the win either, according to lottery officials.
“I looked at the ticket, but we both don’t see well,” the woman’s son joked.
He took the ticket back to Langley Shop in Hyattsville, where he bought it, and confirmed the $50,000 win.
“Five hundred dollars or $50,000, either way it’s a blessing,” her son said.
“I was shocked,” the woman said after her son called her to share the good news.
“I’m just very grateful for this good fortune,” the winner said.
Hyattsville is a suburb of Washington, D.C.
