Tua Tagovailoa signs record contract extension as Miami Dolphins tie-down quarterback

    2024-07-26

Tua Tagovailoa has agreed to a four-year, $212.4 million extension with the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

The 26-year-old had entered the final year of his current $23 million rookie contract after enjoying the best season of his career, and has now been rewarded by the Dolphins. The $53.1 million Tagovailoa will earn annually makes it the richest four-year deal in NFL history, and $167 million of his total contract is guaranteed.

Tagovailoa released a video via GOAT Farm Media saying: "Hey guys, Tua here. Just wanted to say I've agreed to a contract extension." The Dolphins quarterback then thanked head coach Mike McDaniel for believing in him, and praised his teammates for their support.

Last season, Tagovailoa led the Dolphins to the playoffs with an 11-6 record but they were then eliminated by eventual Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs. Miami used its fifth-overall pick on Tagovailoa back in 2020, after the quarterback impressed with Alabama and lost just two games in 24 starts.

Tagovailoa is 32-19 at the Dolphins, but looked at his best last season with career highs in passing yards (4,624) and touchdowns (29). The Miami offense was the best in the NFL last season, and for 2024 the organization has added veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

It was always a case of when, not if for Tua, but fans started to show concerns with the 2024 season fast approaching. Just two weeks ago teammate Tyreek Hill told fans to "be patient" with Tagovailoa, but it didn't take long for the deal to be signed.

Tagovailoa was reaching the end of his $23 million rookie deal, but his new contract sees him earn almost 10 times that figure. "Both sides know that they need each other. Miami Dolphins knows that he's QB1 and Tua knows that he wants to stay in Miami so just stay patient," Hill said on July 12. "Whenever it's time, it's time."

Hill later said that Tagovailoa deserved to be the highest paid quarterback in the league, although he was convinced that the 26-year-old would factor in his teammates. "Everybody is going to be happy. Tua is not a very selfish guy he loves his team, loves his teammates, and wants to keep all the guys together," he said.

"He understands that if he signs a deal that's friendly, he will be able to keep a lot of people around." That being said, Hill added: "I'm hoping he becomes the highest paid though, because he deserves it.

"If you understand where Tua's come from, from his time getting drafted to now, just his whole path and everything he has overcome. It's one of those Cinderella stories."

Things are looking good in Miami, as Tagovailoa can relax knowing he's been paid and look to lead a star offense once again. In another boost, Hill also confirmed that he never wants to leave Miami and will continue his wide receiver partnership with Jaylen Waddle and welcome Beckham Jr. into the building.

"I just told my agent 'Look, don't get me traded this time' as I don't wanna leave Miami," Hill said. "I love Miami. So whatever it takes, I'm very content with where I am right now. I love the team, I love the head coach, I love the organization. I know it's gonna happen."
