A mystery torchbearer in the Olympic opening ceremony has left viewers baffled over their identity.
First appearing with the flame on a boat to Phantom of the Opera music, with garments resembling those seen in Assassin's Creed, the mysterious character then leapt across buildings to break up coverage of nations arriving in boats on the river Seine. Our masked friend was then seen once again heading into the Louvre.
The cutaways to the mystery person, which have continued throughout the ceremony, have sparked deep interest online with speculation rife as to who lies under the hood.

One X user jokingly guessed: "If this masked torchbearer isn't revealed to be Celine Dion then what are we even doing." Another said: "For some insane reason I’m half expecting Leonardo DiCaprio."
Bizarrely, or perhaps purposefully, Louis Vuitton's official account posted on X: "A masked torchbearer crosses the roofs and ateliers of the Maison at Pont Neuf, revealing the savoir-faire of the craftsmen of the #LouisVuitton Medals Trunks for the Olympic Games Paris 2024."
We know for a fact who is not in the hidden man behind the mask: Snoop Dogg. The American rapper is being paraded around practically everywhere along the Seine and certainly basking in all of the attention.
Some of the locals may not be happy with how much Snoop is dominating proceedings, prompting one user on X to tweet: "Please tell me it is not an American star! But an actual French legend."

Another user raised the point how France's most famous athlete, Kylian Mbappé , is not competing in the actual Olympics due to his involvements at the Euros this summer. Could the masked-man have swapped his ninja-turtle mask for darker facewear in the Olympics opening ceremony?
After all, the torchbearer was seen sprinting and athletically springing around building to building. Mbappé is from the Paris suburbs and knows the city well after spending over half a decade at PSG .. Maybe the torchbearer handed it to Mbappé and then disappeared.
The Assassin's Creed conspiracy is still a big winner. The game is produced by French gaming titan Ubisoft, who tweeted an animated picture of main character Arno on a rooftop staring down at the Notre Dame.
The Assassin's Creed X account poured kerosene on the fire by tweeting: "Keep an eye on Paris' rooftops—Arno might just be watching from above" followed by the eyes emoji.
On a more whimsical note, another user insisted the "the torchbearer is The Unknown from the Willy Wonka Experience." That would certainly be an anticlimactic reveal.
Perhaps the masked figure will reveal themselves during the Olympic closing ceremony on August 11th. Or, maybe they'll surprise by winning a gold medal in fencing.
