This year marks the 20th anniversary of the iconic movie comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

Given that it was essentially free advertising to the restaurant, White Castle was generally happy to work with the movie and allow their name and image to be included, but there were a few things the restaurant wanted changed.

“We didn’t get fussy,” Richardson told The Columbus Dispatch . “We didn’t say, ‘Hey, do you think you can change the behaviors of Harold and Kumar?’ If we had come in being overly protective, it wouldn’t have been the right fit.”

During a recent interview with the Columbus Dispatch, White Castle’s marketing vice president Jamie Richardson revealed three changes the studio requested from the movie.

    1. Offensive T-Shirt

Originally, the script of the movie called for Kumar to wear a t-shirt early in the movie that said, “I Like the Pope. The Pope Smokes Dope.” However, due to the Catholic beliefs of founder Billy Ingram and his family, Richardson asked the studio to use a different shirt.

Instead of a shirt suggesting that the Pope smoked marijuana, the movie went with a shirt that had a crude reference to the name of then-President George W. Bush, which Richardson admits probably offended more people than the original shirt.

“Yeah, that was a lot worse,” Richardson told the Columbus Dispatch , in retrospect.

    2. Closed Restaurant

At one point in the movie, Harold and Kumar arrive at a Burger Shack where they were told a White Castle would be. But in the original script, the pair were supposed to arrive at a White Castle that had been closed. Understandably, though, White Castle was not happy about the imagery of a closed-down White Castle included in the movie.

“Originally, though, the main characters were to find a White Castle that had been closed down. Since the company was expanding at the time and didn’t like the imagery of one of its restaurants boarded up, Richardson asked for a revision,” the Columbus Dispatch reported.

    3. Dog Peeing Coca-Cola

According to script originally called for Harold to hallucinate a dog urinating Coca-Cola during an animated dream sequence after he was thrown off a racing cheetah. But White Castle was not crazy about the idea of the dog urinating Coca-Cola considering their partnership with the soft drink company.

“We’ve been a Coca-Cola partner since 1921; that just doesn’t seem right,” Richardson told the makers of the movie.

Richardson also indicated that the makers of the movie were actually relieved at this change, saying that the scene “would have been hard to pull off.”
