A mystery torchbearer in the Olympic opening ceremony has viewers scratching their heads over who they could be.

First spotted with the flame on a boat to the tune of Phantom of the Opera, decked out in gear that wouldn't look out of place in Assassin's Creed, this enigmatic figure then made a dramatic leap across rooftops , interrupting the broadcast of countries parading in boats on the Seine. Later, our hooded pal was seen darting into the Louvre.

The intermittent glimpses of the mysterious individual have set the internet ablaze with curiosity, with folks wildly guessing at the identity of the person beneath the cloak .

One cheeky user quipped: "If this masked torchbearer isn't revealed to be Celine Dion then what are we even doing."

Another chimed in with: "For some insane reason I'm half expecting Leonardo DiCaprio."

In a move that might not be coincidental, Louis Vuitton's official account posted: "A masked torchbearer crosses the roofs and ateliers of the Maison at Pont Neuf, revealing the savoir-faire of the craftsmen of the #LouisVuitton Medals Trunks for the Olympic Games Paris 2024."

One thing's for sure, it's definitely not Snoop Dogg under that mask. The American rapper is soaking up the limelight elsewhere along the Seine, unable to escape the public eye.

Some Parisians might not be thrilled with Snoop stealing the show, leading one social media user to plead: "Please tell me it is not an American star! But an actual French legend."

The Assassin's Creed theory still holds strong. The game is developed by French gaming giant Ubisoft, who tweeted an animated image of main character Arno on a rooftop overlooking the Notre Dame.

The Assassin's Creed X account added fuel to the fire by tweeting: "Keep an eye on Paris' rooftops-Arno might just be watching from above" followed by the eyes emoji.

On a lighter note, another user insisted that "the torchbearer is The Unknown from the Willy Wonka Experience."

That would certainly be a disappointing reveal.
