During its San Diego Comic-Con panel Friday, The Walking Dead: Dead City dropped a sneak peek at Season 2. Suffice it to say that “Bad Negan” is in the house — and he’s not alone, either. He has in hand Lucille, aka the barbed-wire-covered baseball bat that he named after his late wife. (Technically, this would have to be Lucille 2.0, since he broke and cremated the first one back in Season 10 of the mothership.)

The fourth offshoot in the enduring AMC franchise based on Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels, Dead City premiered in the summer of 2023 and was renewed even before its first finale had aired. Well ahead of Season 2 (which won’t air until 2025), the network announced that Sons of Anarchy vet Kim Coates (below) was joining the cast , which also includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the Saviors’ reformed leader, Lauren Cohan as embattled Maggie Rhee, Friday Night Lights grad Gaius Charles as New Babylon marshal Perlie Armstrong, Damages Emmy winner Željko Ivanek as the terrifying Croat and Mahina Napoleon as Negan’s ward, Ginny.

You’ll recall that as The Walking Dead: Dead City wrapped its first season, Negan was pressed into service by Lisa Emery’s cunning Dama to resurrect the villain within himself in order to secure Manhattan as her expansive turf. If the reformed baddie refused, the Dama promised to take more from Maggie’s son Hershel the next time the boy was in her clutches than his toe! ( Read the full recap here. )
