The Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, which was closed in 2020 due to damage from a powerful windstorm , may soon see a revival . NextEra Energy, the utility provider that owns the plant, is considering restarting operations to meet the rising electricity demand in the United States.

NextEra Energy CEO John Ketchum said a thorough review of potential risks would first be required. The company emphasized it wants to ensure that plans to reopen the plant are carried out "in a way that is essentially risk free" before it would be possible to move forward.

This consideration aligns with a broader trend across the country of a comeback for this energy source.

Recently, there has been discussion about bringing Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear reactor back online . This reactor, known for one of the nation’s most infamous nuclear accidents , is now being looked at as a potential contributor to the renewed interest in nuclear energy.

These nuclear initiatives are part of a larger strategy as the U.S. seeks ways to reduce emissions while addressing the growing energy demands from data centers and AI engines. Industry experts predict that the U.S. will need to install more than 10 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity in the near future, which is enough to power approximately seven and a half million homes.
