Here’s a wild thing from 49ers offensive line coach/run game coordinator Chris Foerster’s press conference Friday. San Francisco added veteran offensive tackle Chris Hubbard over the offseason, presumably to add depth they lacked at a key position, but perhaps to also push Colton McKivitz for the starting right tackle job. Hubbard, a 10-year NFL veteran, has 58 starts across 94 games. Last season he started at right tackle all nine games he played for the Titans.

In more drama coming from the San Francisco 49ers, offensive lineman Trent Williams is holding out of training camp alongside Brandon Aiyuk. Unlike Aiyuk, Williams isn’t seeking an extension to his current contract but is looking for guaranteed money. At this point in his career, Williams knows any given snap could be his last, yet he remains arguably the best tackle in the league. Williams, who just turned 36 years old, has three seasons left on his contract, but none of it is guaranteed. He is scheduled to make solid money over the next three years, with base salaries of $20.05 million, $22.5 million, and $32.21 million, respectively, putting him near the top of the market. However, he wants reassurance. If the 49ers cannot make that happen, the Chicago Bears should consider a deal to bring Williams in to protect Caleb Williams‘ blindside.

Brock Purdy’s early training camp deep throws haven’t been great according to reports from the team’s facility. The good news is it’s only Day 2 and finding his touch and timing on those throws will come as the preseason progresses.
Ji’Ayir Brown was a beneficiary of one of those tosses in Friday’s practice. Purdy was looking for Deebo Samuel down the sideline, but he overshot his receiver. Brown was in coverage and in perfect position to leap up and snag the throw while getting his feet in bounds.
The bigger deal here for San Francisco is that Brown is in midseason form in terms of generating takeaways. That was one of his calling cards in college and doing it in the NFL will make him a valuable piece of the 49ers’ defense in his first full season as a starter.
