SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council filed a grievance saying the deputy that shot Sonya Massey in the face was terminated “without just cause.”
Sean Grayson shot 36-year-old Sonya Massey in the head while responding to a call at her home. Grayson was charged with first-degree murder earlier this month . He pled not guilty . Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell announced his firing minutes after he was charged.
Body camera footage captured the moment where Massey was moving a pot of boiling water from her stove when Grayson fired three shots at her. Grayson said in the video he thought Massey was about to throw the boiling water at him and his partner.
“The grievant was terminated without just cause,” officials wrote in the grievance form filed July 18 to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department obtained by WCIA.
FOP officials also argue the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office publicly disseminated details of the investigation on Facebook, which violates the collective bargaining agreement between the union and the county.
The FOP is seeking reinstatement, reimbursement of all lost wages, and restoration of all benefits for Grayson.
WCIA reached out to the police union for comment about the grievance.
“As a labor organization, we have an obligation to protect our members procedural, and due process rights contained in the collective bargaining agreement,” The Illinois FOP said in a statement. “Those rights come with very strict timelines.”
