This year is a landmark one for Irish sport, marking a century since Ireland first took part as an independent nation in the Olympic Games .

A record-breaking squad of 133 athletes will be flying the flag for Ireland at the Paris Games , making it the largest team they've ever sent.

As the vessel transporting the Olympic hopefuls sailed up the River Seine during Friday's opening ceremony, a BBC commentator noted the significance of the 100-year milestone for Ireland's participation in the Olympics.

The comment sparked some humorous reactions from viewers, likely many from Ireland, with one quipping: "'This marks one hundred years of proud participation [in the Olympics] for Ireland' with no explanation why is very funny stuff from the Beeb to be fair."

Another viewer poked fun saying: "BBC commentator 'This marks a 100 years of Ireland competing in the modern Olympics' Well there's a reason we didn't compete as Ireland before then, can you guess what that might be Mr BBC?"

However, some also pointed out the positive remarks about Ireland from the BBC, with a viewer noting: "BBC commentators on Ireland: 'Hello to our great friends across the Irish Sea'. Always nice to hear and the BBC is always very generous in its coverage of Ireland. We're rarely as complimentary in return."

Golfing ace Shane Lowry and hurdler Sarah Lavin had the honour of being Ireland's flagbearers at the grand opening ceremony in Paris, both expressing immense pride at leading their country.

Lowry, who secured a sixth-place finish at The Open last weekend, expressed: "It's a huge honour for me and my family."

"Anybody who knows me knows how patriotic I am, how much I love Ireland, and how much I love playing for my country. I always wear the Irish flag with pride and to get to do something like this is something I'll remember forever."

Meanwhile, Limerick hurdler Lavin shared: "It's surreal to be honest. The greatest honour I've ever been given. To carry the country's flag, it's just something you can't prepare for."

"I'm so grateful for those who've trusted me and put me in this position. It's emotional as well. There's no point lying about that because, you know, there's a lot of people you're representing and be on the biggest sporting stage."

"It's a testament, I guess, to all the hard work and how much you've dug deep, not just in the last 12 months but the entire Olympic cycle and in your entire career. I'm deeply touched and just so excited to get out there."
