Harmful algae found in Arcadia Lake, public advised to take precautions

EDMOND, Okla. ( KFOR ) — The City of Edmond advises the public to take proper precautions when visiting Arcadia Lake after high levels of blue-green algae were found near the dam of the lake.

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality conducted testing of the lake water and says above acceptable levels of blue-green algae were found near the face of the dam at Arcadia Lake.

Officials say the beach, park and boating areas of Arcadia Lake will remain open, however, visitors should stay aware and look for any signs of blue-green algae before getting into the water.

Blue-green algae consists of thick, green film or has a bluish, brownish or reddish green film to it, compared to normal harmless green algae which is stringier and made up of grass-green strands.

Lake visitors and their pets are urged to avoid wading, swimming, boating, skiing or ingesting water where areas of the algae exists.

Those who come in contact with blue-green algae can develop symptoms such as a rash, hives or skin blisters, stomach cramps, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, fever, muscle weakness, or difficulty breathing. If these symptoms develop it is recommended to contact a doctor or Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.

Pets can be easily vulnerable to blue-green algae and if you believe they may have been affected, call a veterinarian right away.

Showering after coming into contact with lake water is always recommended, even when blue-green algae does not exist in the water, to wash off any potentially harmful bacteria.

Water used from the lake by City of Edmond Water Resources will not be impacted by the present algae. Water that is used for residential and business customers is taken from far below surface algae. The treatment process used for lake water before it is distributed makes sure it is safe for both public and drinking use.

The Arcadia Lake staff will continue to monitor the conditions and follow proper protocols created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for precautions and response.
