    School shooting deaths in 2022 second-highest since 2000

    ( NewsNation ) — A report on school crime and safety has revealed school shootings in 2022 had the second-highest annual casualty rate since 2000.

    During 2022, there were four active shooter incidents at secondary and elementary schools. These resulted in the deaths of 52 people, only second to the 82 killed in 2018.

    The 26th annual report of crime and safety indicators in schools is produced jointly by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), Institute of Education Sciences, Department of Education.

    School victimization, inclusive of theft and violence regarding students aged 12-18, dropped from 52 to 22 incidences per 1,000 students.

    The percentage of students in grades 9-12 involved in a physical fight on school grounds halved in 2021 compared to 2011 (6 to 12%).

    Teachers reported less incidents of physical threats against them in 2020-21 (6%) compared to 2011-12 (10%). Attacks also decreased within the period; from 6% down to 4% in the following decade.

    Students who reported being bullied while at school decreased 9% – from 28 to 19% in 2021-22 compared to 2010-11.
