The Los Angeles Chargers have a 300-pound monster playing fullback

The Los Angeles Chargers are in the midst of an organizational overhaul in Jim Harbaugh's first year. One idea they may keep from the previous regime: Letting 330-pound offensive lineman Jordan McFadden play fullback.

The Athletic's Daniel Popper first reported on Wednesday the Chargers were moving McFadden around at guard, as the sixth offensive lineman, and as a fullback. Today, it looks like that has continued with him getting work in before practice one-on-one with quarterback Justin Herbert.

McFadden, one of the team's more intriguing selections last year, played 162 blocking snaps on offense. 12 of those were logged as backfield snaps, where the monster led the way on several runs. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore first implemented this "Hulk Package" with Connor McGovern and the Dallas Cowboys. Upon joining the Chargers, Moore let McFadden have a similar role.

Greg Roman is no stranger to non-traditional players carving out a role as a fullback. Patrick Ricard, a former 300-pound defensive tackle, logged over 2,000 blocking snaps while Roman was offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens.

McFadden has played more fullback snaps than Ben Mason, the free agent fullback the Chargers signed this past spring. While Mason does have familiarity with members of the organization, one career NFL snap does not guarantee him a roster spot. Whatever McFadden's future as an NFL offensive lineman holds, it looks like he will be active on game day to serve as a multipurpose blocking weapon.
