It looks like Hulu ‘s highly anticipated adaptation of Sarah J. Maas ‘ bestselling book series has hit another bump in the road.

Outlander showrunner Ronald D. Moore , who was set to adapt A Court of Thorns and Roses along with Maas, confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that he is no longer working on the series.

“I can tell you I am no longer working on it because I left Disney and I’ve returned to Sony,” Moore said. “And ACOTAR was a project that was at 20th Century Television and Disney.”

There is some silver lining, however. Moore was able to refute recent reports claiming the project was no longer moving forward.

“I had worked on it for a while but it was still in development, as they say, when I left,” he said, before adding, “I don’t know what the status is anymore.”

A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first installment of a five-book series following the lives of the Archeron sisters after Feyre finds herself thrust into the magical faerie realm of Prythian. The first installment finds Feyre taken prisoner by Tamlin, High Fae and High Lord of the Summer Court, after she kills a member of his court. But what ensues is a political-high fantasy, in which each Archeron sister struggles to find her place in this new realm.

When Moore’s involvement in the adaptation was first announced in 2021, the news was celebrated by Maas and fans alike, considering Moore’s considerable success in adapting Diana Gabaldon ‘s historical fantasy series Outlander .

“So, it’s official (and thank you, Josh, for accidentally spilling the beans!): Ron Moore (creator of Outlander and one of my creative idols) and I will co-adapt ACOTAR as a tv show for Hulu!” Maas wrote in a since-deleted post on Instagram , per EW . “I’m currently hard at work writing the pilot with Ron (!!!!!), and while there is SO much more news to share with you guys about bringing this series to life, it just feels so great to finally be able to talk about this! Stay tuned for more details!!”

But it appears that progress has been slow since then. Moore’s exit could have contributed to the delay, but it should be noted that much of Hollywood was put on pause in 2023 during the dual SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Maas is also certainly preoccupied with continuing the ACOTAR and Crescent City series, as she confirmed in early 2024.

It’s only a matter of time before ACOTAR fans get some (hopefully positive) news about the series adaptation. It’s possible Hulu is already looking for another showrunner to help Maas bring the books to screen.

However, it appears the show is still certainly in the works. Though reports claimed it had been scrapped, sources confirmed that the project is definitely still in development .
