The Baltimore Orioles are hosting the San Diego Padres in today's battle. This is the first game of their three-game series. The Padres completed the sweep of their last opponent, the Washington Nationals, including a no-hitter in yesterday's game three by Dylan Cease. For the Orioles, they are coming off a tough series loss to the Miami Marlins. They are primed for a bounce-back series, but let's dive into the game.
Baltimore Orioles vs. San Diego Padres Match Details
Starting pitcher Grayson Rodriquez has been dominating the Padres' batters. Against him, the team is just batting .130 with an overall of 3/23. Also, he has six strikeouts against them and has let up just one home run. The Orioles are first in the MLB in both home runs and total bases. In the team's last 10 games they have a 4-6 record. Gunnar Henderson has been in a slump recently with just two hits in his last 20 at-bats. However, this game would be a great chance to get out of this slump. The team is tied with the Cleveland Guardians for most wins in the American League.
San Diego Padres
The Padres are leading the MLB in batting averages this season. Also, they've been on a hot streaking winning their last five games. Their record for their last 10 games sits at 6-4. The team is also coming off a historic win against the Washington Nationals, where a no-hitter was thrown. The team is still playing without star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. who is out with a right femoral stress reaction. Expect a good game from Jurickson Profar who is leading San Diego in every single category.
Prediction
My prediction is that the Orioles will beat the Padres in the series opener tomorrow night. Although both teams have good records home/away, I think the biggest difference in this game will be pitching and the edge goes to the home team, the Orioles. Grayson Rodriguez has been nothing short of phenomenal this season. Although his ERA is higher than you would like in a starting pitcher, he is top 30 in Strikeouts and 2nd in the MLB in wins with 12, a 12-4 record overall.
Gunnar Henderson is also looking to make a big difference in today's game. Has he been in a bit of a slump? Yes. However he is primed for a bounce back due to the pitcher for the Padres, Adam Mazur. He is a right handed pitcher and Henderson is a lefty batter. If you just look at his slits, he is significantly better against RHP than LHP. His batting average jumps from .244 to .300 and Mazur's primary pitch, 4-seam fastball, he is hitting .295 against RHP throwing fastballs.
We know this is a battle between two good teams, but as I mentioned, I am riding with the Orioles. I think this is a bad matchup for the Padres when it comes to pitching matchups, Other than pitching, these teams are evenly matched. If the Padres were using any of their aces I think this game would be a better matchup but the Orioles need to get back to their winning ways and there will be a regression to the mean when it comes to the Padres coming off Dylan Cease throwing his first no hitter in his career yesterday.
