JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Jefferson County Commission is teaming up with an environmental contractor to keep the county’s waterways clean.

Osprey Initiative installed a litter collection device across a section of Village Creek behind Docena Cut Off Road on Friday morning. The device is designed to capture trash and other debris as it floats downstream to prevent it from entering Bayview Lake. Osprey Initiative said the project is one of its passions as it wants to keep urban waterways pristine for new generations to enjoy.

“Helping this water for the local kids to be able to come see a place with the tadpoles and the frogs,” said owner and president of Osprey Initiative Don Bates. “It’s what we grew up getting to do, and our mission and our passion is making sure we’re doing that for the community, so they can come back to this water.”

The Jefferson County Commission approved funding for these litter collection devices over three years.
