On July 19, 2024, at approximately 7:00 p.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) observed a Tesla traveling at a high rate of speed in the bus lane on International Boulevard near 60th Avenue, the department stated.

When attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle began to evade law enforcement, prompting a high-speed pursuit, the CHP stated.

A CHP Golden Gate Division Air Operations Unit helicopter quickly arrived overhead, providing ground units with crucial support as the Tesla continued to evade authorities, CHP officials stated. Due to the driver’s unsafe driving, ground units strategically backed off, allowing the helicopter to provide continuous updates regarding the vehicle’s location, according to the CHP.

The chase reached its conclusion at a dead-end on 27th Street and Grande Vista Avenue, where the driver was apprehended without further incident, the CHP stated. The suspect was subsequently booked at the Berkeley Jail on multiple charges, including felony evading, reckless driving, and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, according to the CHP.
