KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Kanawha County Schools and West Virginia University celebrated 50 teachers who were chosen to get their master’s degrees Friday.

The degrees will be in literacy education with a reading specialist certification. The teachers will be able to pursue their degrees online, and it will be paid for by Kanawha County Schools.

“This master’s degree is specifically for literacy education. I feel like that’s so important and essential. Especially after coming through COVID, and all these kids have experienced,” said Kristen Green, 5th grade teacher at Overbrook Elementary. “There’s a lot of lack of read-aloud at home with parents, and they just don’t have some of the basic skills. And I feel like this program is really going to help teach those basic, fundamental skills.”

The initiative is part of the county’s dedication to literacy education and addressing learning lost post-COVID.
