Serena Williams' Reddit co-founder husband dubbed 'umbrella holder' at 2024 Olympics

Many famous faces attended the 2024 Paris Olympics, including gold medalist Serena Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

There are some who may know Alexis, 42, as being the tech genius responsible for co-creating a social media platform that can hang with the likes of Instagram and Twitter, which is now X. But while at the Paris Olympics’s opening ceremony he was reduced to being a nameless figure who happened to be assisting the G.O.A.T tennis player Serena, 42.

A commentator for the athletic competition referred to Alex as her personal “umbrella holder,” a label he didn’t shy away from.

While the decorated athlete was on the red carpet, rain began to fall, which prompted Alexis to protect his wife from getting wet by shielding her with an umbrella.

“She looks absolutely incredible,” a commentator from Eurosport said, referencing Serena. “She's got someone just behind us holding an umbrella.”

The commentator praised Alexis, not seeming to realize that Alexis was more to Serena than just her umbrella holder.

“Those are the levels you aspire to,' the commentator added. “To have an actual umbrella holder behind you.”

The awkward moment went viral on X, formerly Twitter, with many commenting on the commentator.

“Journalism has gone downhill with their research,” meanwhile, another added: “Such BS and unacceptable...do some research commentator....!!”

Alexis showed on the red carpet that he was not just an impromptu umbrella holder, but also a loving, chivalrous husband who wanted to persevere his wife’s stunning glam from being ruined with rain. Even if it meant him being portrayed as Serena’s subordinate.

The married couple’s six-year-old daughter Olympia was also with them at the Olympics, posing with her wildly successful parents in front of the Eiffel Tower - the youngster also had an umbrella holder.

Serena joked to NBC Sports that she was torn about being on the sidelines rather than in the Olympic games since she no longer competes - she retired from tennis in 2022.

“I don't know if it's fun or if I'm a little jealous,” she quipped.

During her career, the tennis champ played in four Olympic games between 2000 and 2016.

Although Serena is no longer competing, she confessed to the news outlet that she was stoked to see tennis star Coco Gauff.

“It's amazing. Isn't that great? I'm so excited to see her tonight. I'm just so happy for her. Oh god, I love it,” Sereba said.
