Worries over runoff have some concerned near Toll Road I83A

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — For the last three years, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) has worked on Toll Road 183A in Williamson County.

“Before we even get to construction, we have our design, and even before that we have our schematic and our environment,” said CTRMA Director of Engineering Mike Sexton.

A project of that magnitude has a lot of moving parts.

“We visit with neighborhoods, HOAs, local city governments, municipalities, to talk about the project. Get their interest and buy-in,” Sexton explained.

That also means there can be a wrench or two thrown in during construction. Several KXAN viewers reached out to us to voice concerns over water runoff from the project site.

“There’s going to be situations where we are in-between phases of construction and there may be some changes that you can’t really plan for all the time,” said Sexton.

CTRMA has its own construction engineering team that regularly tries to anticipate and respond to any problems that may arise. That includes problems that rain can sometimes cause.

“We have 10 water quality ponds and four [water] detention facilities, so we funnel to those locations before they’re discharged out into the public world,” Sexton said.

The rapid growth in the area also changes the landscape — quite literally.

“If you drive that corridor, there’s a lot of new developments coming which changes how water moves through these regions,” explained Sexton.

It’s something Sexton said crews check weekly as part of inspection reports to make sure everything is running smoothly.

The end is near for the project. If all goes according to plan, the road is expected to be completed by early 2025.
