The Martin County Schools Transportation Department is home to some of our district’s unsung heroes.

During the July 15 meeting of the Martin County Board of Education, the team was recognized for making incredible progress in the area of school bus inspections.

Among their numerous responsibilities, the team participates in the Annual DPI Bus Inspection conducted by a third party, DPI Transportation Consultant.

The inspection looks at the condition of 10 percent of each district’s bus fleet, performing the same 30-day inspection required of district staff.

The inspection also spot-checks school bus inspection and maintenance files, BSIP reporting, fueling records, bus driver sign-in forms, spare bus assignments, inspector certification and much more.

Service trucks and wreckers can be inspected for safety and maintenance compliance.

Lower is better for bus inspection results. This indicates fewer defects were found during the inspection.

During the 2023-2024 review of four school buses, 10 percent of the MCS school bus fleet, Martin County Schools received a score of 21.75.

The average score for LEA’s in the east region last year was 33.94.

This year’s score showed tremendous improvement over the year before, which was 45.25.
