The National Weather Service in Pocatello, Idaho, has issued a Red Flag Warning for several regions across southeastern Idaho. This warning is in effect from noon today until 10 PM MDT this evening, July 27, 2024, due to the expected development of scattered thunderstorms, which pose a significant wildfire risk.

    Affected Areas:

The Red Flag Warning includes the following Fire Weather Zones:

    • Zone 410: Upper Snake River Valley/Idaho Falls BLM
    • Zone 411: Centennial Mountains and Snake River Range/Targhee National Forest
    • Zone 425: Middle Snake River Valley/Twin Falls BLM north of the Snake River
    • Zone 427: Goose Creek and Raft River Valley/Southern Sawtooth National Forest/Twin Falls BLM south of the Snake River
    • Zone 475: East Salmon River Mountains/Salmon National Forest
    • Zone 476: Lemhi and Lost River Range/Challis National Forest

    Weather Conditions and Impacts:

    • Thunderstorms: Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop during the afternoon and evening, with a coverage of 25% to 50%.
    • Outflow Winds: Gusty and erratic winds near thunderstorms, potentially reaching speeds of 40 to 60 mph, could significantly increase fire spread.
    • Lightning: Frequent lightning associated with these storms can easily ignite new wildfires, particularly in the dry conditions present across the region.

Precautionary Measures: The Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will soon occur. Residents and visitors in the affected areas should exercise extreme caution and avoid activities that could spark a fire. Fire management agencies are on high alert, and the public is advised to stay informed of local weather updates and any fire restrictions.
