This weekend, temperatures will rise to an incredible high. Even if the thermometers measure a lower temperature, it is going to feel over 100 degrees in these retirement hot spots this weekend. Locations around Florida will see the most of it, with popular retirement regions like Marco Island, Naples, and The Villages expecting temperatures easily clocking over 100 degrees. Combine that with the notorious Florida humidity, and you have a recipe for danger, if not death. While Arizona experiences a drier heat, many popular retirement locations in the state also face incredibly high temperatures.
Too much heat is bad for anyone. For people above the retirement age, however, it can be deadly. Compared to the younger crowd, old folks do not adjust well to sudden temperature changes. Plus, older Americans are more likely to have chronic medical conditions. Not only do these conditions affect the body’s response to rising temperatures, but the medication used to treat said conditions may affect the body’s ability to regulate temperature or sweat. A variety of heat-related illnesses affect older people the most. These include heat rash, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heat syncope.
For those living in retirement hot spots across the country, there are a few things you can do to prevent heat-related illnesses or danger this weekend. First, drink plenty of liquids while abstaining from coffee or alcohol as much as possible. Second, if you don’t have air conditioning, keep your living space as cool as possible by avoiding oven use, keeping the shades drawn, and opening your windows at night. If the sweltering temperatures become too much to bear, travel to a location with industrial air conditioning units like the mall or the movie theaters. It is going to feel over 100 degrees in these retirement hot spots this weekend, so be prepared. (After this article, check out The Highest Temperature in the US Every June Since 1950 .)
Methodology:
To determine the major cities where it is going to feel over 100 degrees this weekend, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on heat index forecasts from the NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction . Cities were ranked based on the average forecasted heat index maximum for July 26-28, 2024. Data was aggregated from points to cities using Voronoi tessellation and place boundaries from the U.S. Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line progra m. Only cities with at least 10,000 residents where at least 40% of residents are 65 years and over were considered. Population data is from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and are five-year estimates for 2022.
