Kind Stranger Helps Mom with Stubborn Great Pyrenees Who Didn't Want To Go Home

As pet parents can attest, there are days we all need a little help from a stranger. Sometimes, even the most well-behaved animals can break free from a leash or escape their yards. It’s then that the unity of the pet community shines through, as help from someone unknown can truly save the day.

We can also use assistance when our canine companions decide to have a mind of their own. Luckily, kindness is free, and people are willing to dispense it.

See how an observant passerby provided a dog Mom with the help she needed in this video shared on July 17:

This handsome Great Pyrenees was feeling a little naughty! So much so that even a meaty treat couldn’t persuade Ritchie (@ ritchiethepyr ) to head home. His favorite snack can’t match the thrill of being in the park. However, after a minute of smelling those savory morsels, he gives in and heads towards the treat. But he’s no fool, and when Mom moves it again, closer to the car, he refuses to play her game. LOL! I’ve been here before myself, and it’s no joke with the dog this size. Fortunately, a whistle off in the distance caught his attention, and a passerby who was witnessing his mom’s struggle excitedly called him over to the parking lot.

Whoever she was, she was no stranger to being a pet parent. It didn’t take long before her cheerful disposition had Ritchie running right over. When he arrives, she inquires, “What are you doing? Are you just being stubborn with your Momma?” Pleading the fifth, he sticks his head and her shopping bag instead of acknowledging the question. Ha! But after realizing she has no tasty treats, he finally agrees it’s time to head home. Unexpectedly finding someone willing to help when you need it is always so lovely.

Ways to Manage a Stubborn Dog

Although stubborn dogs are sometimes unmovable, a few strategies may help.

1. Always be consistent with commands, as this can help avoid confusion.
   
   
2. Avoid punishment . Instead, use high-value rewards to reinforce good behavior and be patient when it isn’t working. Although this can be hard, Ritchie’s mom did a great job of maintaining her sense of humor.
   
   
3. Train regularly. The more consistent we are with training , the more likely our dogs will exhibit the behavior we wish to see. Even though sometimes they seem to get a kick out of disobeying us.

Although we may not understand why our dogs don’t always listen, perhaps they have their reasons. Maybe the kind lady wearing a pretty dress needed a little puppy love, and meeting a dog like Ritchie undoubtedly improved her day as well.
