The Miami Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa officially agreed upon a massive four-year, $212.4 million extension on Friday afternoon. While there are people criticizing the move and looking at Tagovailoa’s inabilities, this deal makes a lot of sense going forward.

Let’s take a closer look at some reasons why getting Tagovailoa getting the largest extension in Dolphins history makes sense.

    The wide receivers have chemistry

The big thing that this Tagovailoa contract extension means is that the top two wide receivers will be tied with him for a majority of the deal. Jaylen Waddle is under contract through the 2028 season while Tyreek Hill is currently under contract for three more seasons. Having those two out wide means the opposing defenses are going to be struggling to find some answers.

Just look at the what the Dolphins did offensively last season to understand. It takes a lot of pressure to do well as the quarterback, and Tagovailoa has proven to live up to the occasion consistently.

He’s starting to find his groove

One way to make sure that the contract given out is appropriate is to see what the player projects to become. After two seasons of struggling to find his own, Tagovailoa has really found his footing with the Dolphins.

Tagovailoa has played 30 games and is 19-11 with an average of 272.4 passing yards per game and a 54:22 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

He finished ninth in NFL MVP voting in the 2022 season and was a Pro Bowler for the first time in his career last season. It appears that after question marks around his abilities early on in his career that people are going to finally put him in the conversation of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

He’s the best option for the price

When NFL quarterbacks hit free agency, it is a sign there are obvious flaws. What quarterback is going to run the Mike McDaniel offense better than Tua Tagovailoa? Starting over with a rookie quarterback would cause a lot of disbelief in the Dolphins’ chances to go far in the playoffs, and signing a quarterback like Dak Prescott in the offseason is going to cost more of the cap for similar, if not worse, production.
