Everton are closing in on a major signing, with Irish defender Jake O'Brien set to join from Lyon.

The two clubs have reached an agreement in principle, and O'Brien is ready to sign a five-year contract with the Toffees. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano , a medical is being planned, potentially moving to Monday to finalize the deal. The final monetary terms are yet to be disclosed.

O'Brien had an impressive season with Lyon, becoming a key player in their defence. He helped the team secure European football and reach the Coupe de France final, where he scored, boosting his reputation. His performances also earned him an international debut for the Republic of Ireland against Portugal.

Everton aren't the only club interested in O'Brien; Ajax and West Ham were also been linked. However, it appears Merseyside will be his next destination.

    Irish defenders in demand

The move comes amid a busy transfer window for Irish defenders. Another player potentially on the move is Dara O'Shea, who has attracted interest from Celtic.

The 25-year-old has been capped 26 times for Ireland and could bolster Celtic's defence as they aim for a stronger showing in the Champions League next season.

With Nathan Collins recently breaking the Irish transfer record with a £23 million ($29.6 million) move to Brentford, O'Brien's potential transfer to Everton highlights the growing demand for Irish defensive talent in European football.
