Former Jurgen Klopp coach tells Arne Slot to sell one Liverpool player after private Man Utd chat

Former Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has told Arne Slot to sell one player this summer despite his importance to the side.

Achterberg followed Jurgen Klopp out the door at the end of last season following the German's shock decision to leave Anfield , having already spent 13 years in his role on Merseyside. The Dutchman, who spent 11 years as a player for Tranmere Rovers, spent time under Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers prior to Klopp's arrival in 2015.

But following his recent departure from the club, Achterberg has now revealed who he thinks should leave Liverpool this summer for the sake of his own career. The man in question is second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher , who has already been linked with a move away from Anfield in the current transfer window.

Speaking on The Football Historian Podcast, as per SPORTbible , Achterberg said: "I said to Kelleher like five years ago, when he'd not played too many games, 'You know you're better than (David) De Gea, I tell you now. You're a lot more technical, a lot better at kicking, your reactions are a lot better but you need to play to make it happen'.

"Hopefully he gets a move, because he deserves to be number one. You know if you have two goalies like that you probably have the best goalie squad Liverpool probably ever had in a number one and two position in the same time - it's crazy."

Earlier this summer, Kelleher made an honest admission over his future and claimed that "talks" would be had with Slot this summer over his position at the club. Unfortunately for the Irishman, Alisson is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and is likely to remain no.1 until he leaves, so taking his spot is near-on impossible.

That's despite Kelleher's qualities, with the 25-year-old coming on leaps and bounds in recent years. Last season, Kelleher made more appearances than in any other campaign thanks to Alisson missing a large chunk of the season through injury.

Kelleher's involvement justified Klopp's decision to keep him last summer, when he was again heavily linked with a move away. Nottingham Forest also came calling in January, reports BBC Sport , but again Liverpool held firm.

Liverpool will not let its back-up goalkeeper leave for a small sum this summer if they allow him to depart , however. The Reds would only entertain a bid worth well in excess of $26million (£20million/€24million) for Kelleher, This Is Anfield reports, as they would want to ensure that they got a fee that reflects his significant experience and quality.

Unless someone pays that fee, however, then Kelleher may have to settle for a loan away instead, although Liverpool will not allow that to happen if they cannot find an adequate replacement for the Irishman.
