Michael C. Hall Attempts to Explain How Dexter Can Return in ‘Resurrection’ After Dying in ‘New Blood’

Somehow, Dexter will be back.

Michael C. Hall will lead Showtime/Paramount+’s upcoming “Dexter” sequel series , “Dexter: Resurrection,” which is set to follow the events of the last sequel series, “Dexter: New Blood.” The big question is how will that be possible since the 2022 finale saw the serial killer bleeding out in the freezing cold.

At the time, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips confirmed that “Dexter is dead.” So, how is he back now that that’s been confirmed?

“Was it?” Hall coyly asked at the Variety studio, presented by Google TV, at San Diego Comic-Con. “I don’t know what I am authorized to say other than, it’s really cold out there.”

“Dexter” aired on Showtime from 2006 to 2013, with “Dexter: New Blood,” a limited series, airing for one season from 2021 to 2022, picking up 10 years after the original finale.

“Dexter: Resurrection,” set to debut in Summer 2025, will pick up “right where we left off,” Hall said. Plus, this will likely be an ongoing drama, rather than limited. It could “potentially” be multiple seasons.

The original “Dexter” has had a recent resurgence, rising on the Neilsen charts and landing in the No. 2 spot for the week of June 24 with 1.48 billion viewing minutes across all platforms.

“It’s unbelievable,” he told Variety of the new popularity. “There’s something about this world, something about this character that captivates people.”

What that is, Hall doesn’t know.

“It’s hard to say. I think there’s many different ways this show appeals to people as there are people who watch it. But I think maybe a biding thing is, in a world in which we feel a sense of being out of control people like spending time with a character who’s taking his own, unique control of his little corner of the world,” he explained. “I think we all have our shadow side that we contend with and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most. People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way. People, I think, relish the invitation to identify with someone who is contending with this much darkness, and maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable — even though he’s doing what he’s doing.”

At the end of “New Blood,” Dexter saw his sister Deb ( Jennifer Morgan) via a flashback. In the new series, the beloved character could return again. “Never say never. This world has sort of magical element, so I wouldn’t definitively say no to any proposition,” he told Variety . “There’s a whole cast of characters that populate his wider world and have the potential to re-emerge.”
