DUNMORE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— The 35th annual Troop R Camp Cadet graduation was held Friday in Lackawanna County.
62 cadets graduated from Troop R. The event was held at the Performing Arts Center at Marywood University in Dunmore.
Camp Cadet is a summer camp for boys and girls from Pennsylvania between the ages of thirteen to fifteen. Troop R serves 4 counties in our area; Lackawanna, Susquehanna, Pike, and Wayne counties.
It was held on the campus for 6 days this week at Marywood University. It is staffed with Troopers, local police officers, and many other volunteers.
The goal of Camp Cadet is to introduce participants to the criminal justice system and establish a positive relationship with law enforcement personnel, build self esteem, and integrity.
Also at the Camp Cadet graduation, Detectives Jason Heiler and Kyle Gilmartin of the Scranton Police Department were presented awards for their heroic actions the night Gilmartin was shot January 11.
The detectives received a standing ovation at the awards presentation Friday in Lackawanna County.
Camp Cadet is free of charge and open to all youth. The camp focuses on discipline, self-esteem, teamwork, drug and alcohol education, and violence prevention.
