While the heart and soul of the Olympics is, obviously, a celebration of sport and a coming together of international athletes, there is also a lot of pomp and circumstance that comes with the Games. A lot of chest-pounding patriotism. Bragging rights to be earned. Especially when it comes to the Opening Ceremony.
Over in France for the Paris 2024 Games, the competing countries paraded down the Seine River for the Opening Ceremony. The Eiffel Tower was lit up with the trademark Olympic rings. Lady Gaga performed; so did Celine Dion; Snoop Dogg carried the Olympic torch to its final stop. Which is all to say that the City of Love went all out for their kickoff to Paris 2024.
Meanwhile, in Tahiti, where Olympic surfing will take place, there was another Opening Ceremony – if not a trimmed down version, and one infused with its own nationalistic pride. The surfers (uncharacteristically) dressed up, they repped their nations, and traditional Tahitian dancers took the stage. Keep scrolling for a glimpse inside surfing's own Opening Ceremony.
Al Cleland Jr. of Mexico, and Candelaria Resano of Nicaragua. The athletes ready to march. Part of the traditional Tahitian elements of the ceremony. John John Florence and Griffin Colapinto of Team USA. Part of the event included a Rahiri celebration: a traditional Tahitian ceremony celebrating fair-play and mutual respect between opponents. More scenes from the Rahiri celebration. Unity and respect through sport. Traditional Tahitian dancers. 14-year-old Siqi Yang of China. Team Brazil: Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, and Tatianna Weston-Webb. (Not pictured: Joao Chianca) Team France: Vahine Fierro and Kauli Vaast. Team Australia: Ethan Ewing, Molly Picklum, and Jack Robinson. (Not pictured: Tyler Wright) Team USA: John John Florence, Carissa Moore, Griffin Colapinto, Caroline Marks, and Caity Simmers. Make it official, Olympic surfing in Tahiti, put it on a pin.
