Bills Mafia has perfect reason to celebrate the Tua Tagovailoa contract extension

Typically, when a division rival secures their franchise quarterback, it isn't good news. However, in the wake of the Miami Dolphins locking up Tua Tagovailoa to a four-year contract extension , audible celebrating can be heard coming from Western New York.

Tua Tagovailoa has been the opposite of a Buffalo Bills killer

Miami has come on as a very strong team in recent years. Since hiring Mike McDaniel to take over as their head coach, the Dolphins have a 20-14 record, and have orchestrated one of the league's best offenses. Last year, the Tagovailoa-led offense ranked third in points per game, third in yards per game, second in points per play, second in yards per play, and third in touchdowns per game.

So, why are Bills fans celebrating? Primarily, it's pretty simple – Tagovailoa has struggled mightily against Buffalo in his career.

Tagovailoa has started seven games against the Bills, and owns a 1-6 record while averaging only a 61.1% completion percentage. He also averages only 207.7 passing yards per game, has a 6:7 TD/INT ratio, and has been sacked 12 times.

Along with Tagovailoa struggling against Buffalo, the Dolphins haven't won a playoff game since 2000.

Tagovailoa was one-upped just six hours later

The new contract extension for Tagovailoa was announced around 3:00pm on July 26, bringing to light his new four-year, $212M contract. Just six hours later, the Green Bay Packers made Jordan Love the highest paid quarterback in league history with a four year, $220M contract. (Fun fact: Green Bay has made two different quarterbacks the highest paid in league history in the last three seasons.)

When Josh Allen signed a six year, $258M contract extension in 2021, there was plenty of concern about whether or not it would limit the Bills' opportunity to compete. Now, just three years later, his contract sits outside the top-10 quarterback contracts on a per-year basis.

Allen will almost assuredly command a new contract at some point, but for now, his cost compared to his ability looks like a screaming bargain in the NFL quarterback salary landscape.
