Retired U.S. tennis legend Serena Williams was an unexpected star during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 23-time grand slam winner carried the Olympic Torch while riding in a boat with men's tennis great Rafael Nadal, former U.S. track star Carl Lewis and Romanian five-time gold medalist gymnast Nadia Comaneci.

"Have you ever had an unforgettable moment? That was yesterday for me," wrote Williams on social media.

"From being part of an amazing Open Ceremony at the Paris Olympics-to riding in the boat in the rain-and it was pouring! So much so my lashes came right on off. Unforgettable!," she added.

Williams won gold in women's tennis at London 2012, defeating Maria Sharapova, 6-0, 6-1. She retired from the sport in September 2022.
