BISMARCK, ND ( KXNET ) — In general, senior homes, retirement communities and other forms of care centers are excellent ways for older people to receive the help they need — but over time, these buildings tend to fill up as more and more Americans enter the “golden years” of their lives. This may cause those concerned about sending away their loved ones to wonder: Which states are facing this problem the most, and just how full are the centers in question?

To find out which states are at the greatest risk of overcrowding their senior homes, personal injury attorneys with InjuredInFlorida researched the number of senior citizens in nursing and care facilities — as well as the average number of beds per facility and care buildings in each part of the US — using data from KFF.org . When the site’s polling data was analyzed, it was noted that North Dakota’s centers are some of the most crowded in the nation.

Out of every 100 beds at senior care centers in North Dakota, 85.86 are filled at all times, which makes frequently admitting and properly caring for every resident of these homes a difficult endeavor. When rounded up, this gives the Peace Garden State a total Certified Nursing Facility Occupancy Rate of 86%, an overall average shared with New York and West Virginia. Despite this fact, both WV and NY rank higher in terms of exact numbers, and all three fall slightly under Alaska — which has both the smallest number of residents and the largest percentage of occupied beds.

“With an aging population,” explains an InjuredInFlorida spokesperson, “the pressures on retirement homes and care facilities are greater than ever. Analyzing the states that have retirement homes most at risk of breaching capacity can give valuable insight into potential health and safety concerns in care facilities. Identifying these at-risk areas can help healthcare providers and policymakers appropriately allocate resources and optimize healthcare strategies, ensuring that elderly residents get the support and care they need.”
