Ring of Honor (ROH) seems in the midst of a death march, and the company’s owner Tony Khan likely sped that up with a weird idea he has in mind for the brand.

Wrestling companies like WWE, WCW, and ECW are seen by many as the most influential in the industry. However, Ring of Honor has a very unique place in the history of the business as the first major platform for many wrestling legends of the last 20 years.

At the tail end of the last decade, ROH was at another peak moment via their work with NJPW and the Bullet Club faction. But the brand went into a steep decline soon after and it led to its eventual sale to AEW owner Tony Khan two years ago.

When Khan purchased the company, there was a lot of hope among fans that his love of the brand would lead to a new boom period for Ring of Honor . However, Khan has done little to elevate it and has mostly used the company’s belts to benefit AEW . It has left a bitter taste in the mouths of long-time ROH fans.

Well, a new idea Khan is open to will not ease the frustration of many ROH fans. In a press conference after ROH’s Death Before Dishonor PPV event, Khan revealed a potential name change could be coming for ROH.

Ring of Honor to soon be rebranded to AEW ROH?

“I don’t think it’s out of the question to say, and I don’t think it’s sacrilegious to say that it would only help grow the ROH brand if I were to license it, [and] if it were AEW ROH,” he said.”I don’t think that’s a crazy thing and I don’t think it would be bad. I think it would actually be good for everybody. Then I think people would see more of the connectivity that exists between promotions and what we’re going for.

“Would Ring of Honor, frankly, have a lot more value as AEW Ring of Honor? Yeah, probably it would,” he added. “And I think I’ve come to that realization as far as the presentation. And that might mean, frankly, a more cohesive absorption of the promotion.”

Ring of Honor being rebranded AEW Ring of Honor is sure to rub their most devoted fans the wrong way. Furthermore, with AEW ticket sales and ratings hitting new lows of late, connecting ROH to them will not help bring it back to relevancy as he assumes. It also displays Khan’s continued belief that the AEW product is as strong as ever despite obvious signs of a major decline.
