By Alexandria Brooks,
Out of all of the pie flavors, one that's underrated in my book is banoffee. This pie combines the natural sweetness of bananas with the richness of toffee, which is why it's called banoffee pie. It also contains whipped cream and chocolate shaving for extra decadence. In addition to its yummy flavors, this pie is a breeze to make because it doesn't require a lengthy baking time. Keep reading to discover more about this pie and a tasty recipe to whip up at home!
What is banoffee pie?
Banoffee pie is a dessert consisting of a pastry or graham cracker crust that's filled with sliced bananas, toffee or caramel sauce, and whipped cream. The pie is often topped with shaved chocolate before serving. It's believed that Nigel Mackenzie and Ian Dowding invented banoffee pie at a restaurant in England called The Hungry Monk. Known for its balance of sweet and creamy flavors, this pie is a wow-worthy option that's simple to prepare.
Easy step-by-step process for DIY caramel
Using a caramel sauce like dulce de leche (which is made by gently cooking milk and sugar) provides the pie with a buttery flavor and gooey texture. Usually you can find cans of dulce de leche in the baking aisle. But, if you're unable to find it, you can make it at home using a can of sweetened condensed milk . Simply follow these steps from The Cooking Foodie blog to turn the pantry staple into a thick dulce de leche.
Fill a pot with water and bring to a boil.
Once boiling, carefully lower a 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk into the pot using tongs.
Reduce water to a simmer and cook for two hours. ( Note: Make sure the water completely covers the can during the cooking process.)
Remove the can from the water with the tongs and cool completely.
Open the can and use the dulce de leche as directed in the recipe.

A simple and mouthwatering banoffee pie recipe
This Banoffee Pie recipe is also from The Cooking Foodie and uses a graham cracker crust that takes less than 10 minutes to bake. The pie is perfect for any occasion and can be assembled the night before. If you're looking to add more richness to the pie, substitute chocolate graham crackers for the plain variety when making the crust.
