‘Invincible’ Creator Robert Kirkman Says Mark’s New Blue Suit in Season 3 Is His ‘Darkest and Most Intense’ Era

“Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman is keeping things under wraps for Seasons 3 and 4 of the animated adaptation of his popular comic book series, he’s teasing that Prime Video series’ upcoming season will “blow people away.”

The series recently wrapped its second season in April, where viewers followed high school senior and titular superhero Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his human mother Debbie (Sandra Oh) dealing with the devastating realization that Mark’s father, Nolan (J.K. Simmons) — aka the terrifyingly powerful Omni-Man — is part of an alien race hellbent on galactic domination.

“I feel like we’re just getting started. I’m very hopeful that this show can be around for awhile,” Kirkman said at the Variety Studio, presented by Google TV at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. “With Season 4, we’re really hitting our stride. There’s really exciting stuff coming up in Season 4.”

Though Kirkman couldn’t share too many specifics for either upcoming seasons, he shared pride in how “Invincible” as a series “builds” on its characters and storyline with each iteration. “I think you can see that Season 2 is an advancement of a lot of things that were introduced in Season 1. The stakes were higher, things got a little crazier, and there were a lot of pieces moving that were hinting at a lot of bigger stories. Those bigger stories really start crashing down in Season 3. But Season 4 dwarfs Season 3 in a lot of really crazy ways. It’s an escalating show where each season is going to be bigger, crazier, more intense, and that stuff really kicks off with Season 3.”

Comic book fans will appreciate that Season 3 will introduce Mark’s new black-and-blue suit, which is both a major color and tone shift for the character, according to Kirkman.

“Going into the third season, it seemed like a good time to bring a new Mark to the forefront after everything he’s been through in Season 2. He’s in a different headspace and that gets reflected in his costume,” Kirkman told Variety . “Anyone who has read the comic book series knows the blue suit era of ‘Invincible’ is the darkest and the most intense, and there’s a lot of really big things that are around the blue suit.”

Kirkman’s “Invincible” shares a Prime Video home with another gritty superhero series, “The Boys.” When asked if there could ever be a universe where Omni-Man and Homelander could be seen on the same screen, Kirkman admitted “there have been some chats” but there’s nothing planned — for now.

“It does seem like a fun thing,” Kirkman said. “You got to see Homelander and Omni-Man fighting in ‘Mortal Kombat 1.’ That was cool. I think that’s something people would be interested in. Maybe someday we do something exciting, but there’s no plans as of yet.”
