Wichita, KS — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas, effective this afternoon and continuing through the upcoming week. The outlook includes a forecast of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, particularly in eastern Kansas. While these storms are not expected to be severe, they may bring heavy rain and brief gusty winds.

Further showers and thunderstorms are anticipated in central and north-central Kansas late tonight into Sunday morning. Like the earlier storms, these are not expected to reach severe levels but may produce gusty winds.

Looking ahead, the NWS has issued an Excessive Heat Watch starting Monday afternoon and continuing through Thursday evening. During this period, dangerous heat index values around 110 degrees are expected areawide. The most intense heat will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours. Residents are advised to take precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned environments, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. It is also recommended to check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.

The Excessive Heat Watch covers a wide area, including major cities such as Wichita, Salina, and Hutchinson. This extreme heat and high humidity can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Showers and storms are possible throughout the week, with the best chances occurring in the late evening and overnight hours, particularly in central and north-central Kansas. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated at this time, the NWS urges residents to stay informed and prepared.
