The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting applications to provide financial assistance to eligible dairy producers who incur milk losses in their dairy herds due to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, also known as H5N1. USDA’s Farm Service Agency is assisting with a portion of financial losses resulting from reduced milk production when cattle are removed from commercial milking in dairy herds with confirmed positive H5N1 tests. Positive test results must be confirmed through the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service National Veterinary Services Laboratories. Here in western Wisconsin we are celebrating a week with no rain. The dry spell began after we had 4 inches of rain in 18 hours with strong winds. Jimmy Ellis reported he had a trampoline in his hay field. My daughter in Illinois said a farmer in her area lost two grain bins and the owner was still hunting one of them. I saw a field of corn I had photographed earlier this summer – and that looked beautiful at that time – is now half gone from the high water.
