Simone Biles Can Make History At The 2024 Olympics If She Does This

Simone Biles is already one of the most-decorated gymnasts in the history of the sport, and she has a chance to make even more history this weekend.

Biles already has five elements named after her — two on vault, two on floor and one on beam — and the 27-year-old submitted a sixth element to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) on Friday, this one on the uneven bars.

If Biles lands the move, which involves a clear hip circle forward into a handstand with a 1.5 turns (540 degrees), she would become the only active gymnast to have an element named after her in all four gymnastic events.

Biles would also become just the second female gymnast with at least six elements named after her, joining Soviet Union five-time gold medalist Nellie Kim, who had seven.

Elements get named after a gymnast if they are the first to complete it during international competition. The move must also satisfy a certain degree of difficulty in the eyes of FIG.

Below are the namesake moves already on Biles’ resume:

The Biles and Biles II (vault)

The first vault moves includes a half-twist onto the vaulting table with a front-double full somersault before the landing (done at the 2018 World Championships). The second is a Yurchenko vault that includes two flips in a pike position (done at the 2023 World Championships).

The Biles and Biles II (floor)

The first floor move is a double layout with a half-twist during the second flip (landed at the 2013 World Championships as a 16-year-old). Her second floor move is a triple-double that involves two flips and three twists (landed at the 2019 World Championships).

    The Biles (beam)

Her beam move involves two twists and two flips during the dismount. She landed this one at the 2019 World Championships.
