The Penguin , the Colin Ferrell-led TV series follow-up to Matt Reeves 2022 film The Batman , will premiere on HBO Thursday, Sept. 19 at 9/8c (and will also be available to stream on Max).

Originally announced as a Max Original, The Penguin — like several ot he upcoming series, including Dune: Prophecy , the IT prequel Welcome to Derry and the (green) Lanterns DC hero series — was recently rerouted to HBO.

The announcement of the DC crime drama’s premiere date at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday evening was accompanied by the release of the final trailer, above.

In the offshoot of Reeves’ The Batman , Farrell’s title character hopes to call the shots in Gotham after Carmine Falcone’s demise. Oz, though, immediately finds himself up against Carmine’s children — Sofia ( How I Met Your Mother ‘s Cristin Milioti) and Alberto ( Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ‘s Michael Zegen) — among several others who have no intention of letting him take control of Gotham’s criminal underbelly.

Ordered to series over two years ago, the eight-episode Warner Bros. Television/DC Studios drama “continues the epic crime saga” that filmmaker Reeves began in 2022 with Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman .

The previously announced cast also includes Rhenzy Feliz ( Marvel’s Runaways ), Michael Kelly ( House of Cards ), Shohreh Aghdashloo ( The Expanse ), Deirdre O’Connell ( Outer Range ), Clancy Brown ( Billions ), James Madio ( The Offer ), Theo Rossi ( Sons of Anarchy ), Scott Cohen ( Gilmore Girls ) and Carmen Ejogo ( Your Honor ).

The Penguin is executive-produced by Reeves, Farrell, Dylan Clark, Lauren LeFranc (who writes and serves as showrunner), Craig Zobel (who directed the first three episodes) and Bill Carraro.
